As the school year winds down and you prepare to pack up your dorm room, consider turning your end-of-year cleanout into an opportunity to give back. Donating your unwanted items to the ReStore is not only environmentally responsible, but it also supports our mission to build affordable housing right here in in the Greater Matthews community. Here’s how you can declutter your dorm and make a positive impact at the same time:
Assess and Organize - Start by assessing all your belongings and decide what you really need to keep, what can be donated, and what should be recycled. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if you’ve used the item in the last year. If the answer is no, it’s probably time to let it go. Or if you're graduating or traveling across country, whether you have the space for items to make the journey. Make separate piles for items to keep, donate, and discard.
Choose ReStore Friendly Items - Our ReStore welcomes a variety of household goods that are in clean, working condition. This includes furniture, electronics, décor items, and even some unused school supplies. Before you donate, make sure the items are clean and in good condition. Remember, if you wouldn’t use it in its current state, it’s not ready for donation. You can read more about our donation guidelines here.
Understand the Impact - Every item you donate to the ReStore has an impact on our community. Sales generated from donated items help support the construction and repair of affordable housing in the Greater Matthews community. By choosing to donate to the ReStore, you're not just clearing out your space; you're also helping a family gain or maintain a home. It’s a simple action with a significant impact.
Plan your Donation Drop-off - Our drop-off hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10:30am-4:00pm, and Saturdays 9:30am-4:00pm. If you have large items, you may qualify for a free pickup. Planning your drop-off or pickup ahead of time ensures a smooth and quick process, making it easier to manage during the busy move-out days.
Spread the Word - Encourage your peers to join in on the effort! The more people contribute, the greater the impact we can have together.
Reflect on the Benefits - Not only does donating to the ReStore help you declutter and reduce waste, but it also supports sustainability and community development. Plus, you'll enjoy a cleaner, lighter move-out, which is always a bonus!
As you say goodbye to another academic year, take this opportunity to do good with your goods! Donating to the ReStore is a meaningful way to end the year on a high note. Remember, every donation helps us build a stronger community. So clean out, help out, and head home knowing you’ve made a difference!
